Statement
written by Paul Assimacopoulos

I prefer to shoot very close to my subjects and just break the socially accepted boundary to get the portraits I am after. The sometimes uncomfortable proximity allows me to establish an intimate but tenuous connection with the person. I prefer to gradually move in from a voyeur's distance where the subject presents as a socially-clothed public persona and then methodically work closer until we are almost face to face, with only the lens between us. I find this to be a very moving experience as it is both a creative exchange and also a slight confrontation in which we are both vulnerable. To me this is a true portrait. In this way photography can be both a fine art and an experiential or emotional document. I usually like photographing people engaged in a struggle, or caught in the act of expression-particularly performers and other artists. My other favorite subjects are small, but interesting objects, such as dying flowers.
